Retreat in your way-back machine to the plains of Oklahoma 120 years ago and you would never have encountered this creature. Only a handful existed—mostly in zoos. The American Bison was fast-tracking toward the realm of the Dodo. But thankfully, in 1905 William T. Hornaday came to their rescue when he insisted fifteen bison be donated from the New York Zoological Park to the Wichita National Forest and Game Preserve.
Today, we can roam with these magnificent beasts and hunt them with our telephoto lenses. Hopefully, future time travelers will never need return to our time to see them.
